Snakes in Wingecarribee

Native snake species are a protected animal under the NSW Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016. 

Snakes play an important role in our local ecosystems and are one of the many unique reptiles that live in the Southern Highlands and may be observed more frequently during the warmer months from late October to late April.

Venomous snakes in Wingecarribee 

Several snake species that inhabit the area are venomous.

The following actions can reduce the chance of snake bite:   

• Give snakes some space and they will generally leave the area.
• Do not try to catch or kill snakes. This is when most snake bites occur.
• Remove loose sheets of tin and other cover from around the house.   
• Mow around buildings and other high traffic areas.   
• Wear enclosed leather shoes when walking in long grass or near creeks or farm dams.  
• When bushwalking always wear appropriate shoes and stay on designated walking tracks.
• Avoid taking dogs for walks near long grass or rivers in the warmer months when snakes are likely to be breeding.
• Keep areas that may attract mice clean (e.g. aviaries, chicken coops).

• If you are working in or walking through snake habitat, it is recommended that you carry a snake bite kit.

You can register with local agencies to complete first aid training for snake bites.

In the event that you need snake removed from your property, contact a local wildlife group like WIRES or Wildlife Rescue South Coast or search online for a licensed snake catcher.
