Council Partners with Need for Feed to Aid Rural Communities

Wingecarribee Shire Council has partnered with Need for Feed Australia to provide much-needed assistance to communities in Victoria and South Australia that have been devastated by recent fires and drought.
Need for Feed Australia is a Lions Club charity dedicated to providing essential resources to those impacted by natural disasters.
The partnership has allowed Need for Feed to utilise Council-owned land, including Bong Bong Common and Moss Vale Cemetery, to mow and bale pasture. A total of 470 bales of hay have been collected and transported to directly help farmers get back on their feet. David Wood Park will be mowed and baled in the coming weeks.
Need For Feed Volunteer Fodder Coordinator for NSW, Jim Parrett expressed gratitude for the enthusiastic support of Wingecarribee Shire Council and the local community.
"Our partnership with Wingecarribee Council is a true win-win. By baling areas, we reduce their outdoor maintenance while simultaneously assisting farmers in need recover from disasters like fires, floods, and droughts."
Jim further explained that he and his team visit disaster affected areas every six weeks, increasing their frequency during emergencies, such as the Grampians fire, to assist farmers in coping with the burden. The efforts from the past week have resulted in the production of fodder that will directly assist 26 farmers in their recovery.
"This project would not have been possible without the kindness and collaboration of everyone involved. We look forward to many more successful collaborations with Council,” said Jim.
Wingecarribee Shire Council is committed to supporting other communities in need. Having experienced the devastating bushfires of 2019/2020, Council understands firsthand the profound impact these events can have on agriculture and the livelihoods of those affected.
In addition to providing crucial support to struggling farmers, the project will help reduce local grass coverage, thereby lowering the fire risk within the Shire. By baling the hay at no cost, the initiative also ensures resource efficiency and cost savings for the Council.
Need For Feed provide hay, non-perishable household goods, dog food, other animal feed, and monetary contributions to support our efforts. For more information please visit: www.needforfeed.org/donate.html
