Wingecarribee Shire Council is pleased to announce the adoption of its Biosecurity Weed Control Program 2024-2029. This proactive initiative empowers Council to address specific weed threats impacting the local environment, biodiversity, and agricultural industries.

While Wingecarribee Shire Council actively contributes to the South East Regional Strategic Weed Management Plan, this new program goes beyond regional efforts to target locally significant weeds such as Yellow Flag Iris and Ox Eye Daisy. These invasive species pose a direct threat to our unique ecosystems and agricultural productivity.

Wingecarribee Shire Mayor Jesse Fitzpatrick welcomed the program. “By taking a targeted approach, we can better protect the unique character of our Shire, ensuring a healthier environment for future generations”.

Key Features of the Wingecarribee Shire Council Biosecurity Weed Control Program 2024-2029:

  • Targeted Weed Control: The program focuses on locally significant weeds that pose immediate risks to the Shire's environment and economy.
  • Community Education and Engagement: Council will engage with the community through educational campaigns and workshops to raise awareness about weed identification, prevention, and control.

  • Scientifically Driven Approach: The program utilises the Weed Risk Management System (WRMS) to prioritise weed threats based on their potential impact, spread, and control difficulty.

  • Effective Enforcement: Council will enforce weed control regulations to ensure compliance and protect the Shire's natural assets.
