Froctober: Resetting Fashion in Wingecarribee Shire

Australians love fashion, but with 200,000 tonnes of clothing sent to landfill each year, it's time for a change.  

This October, Wingecarribee Shire Council will host Froctober, a month dedicated to sustainable fashion.  

From free film screenings and upcycling workshops to a grand clothing swap and talk from a sustainability expert, Froctober offers a variety of events to inspire and educate residents on how to reduce their fashion's environmental impact. 

Event Details: 

(Please note all events will be held at the Moss Vale Civic Centre, located at 68 Elizabeth Street, Moss Vale.)  

FREE Film Screening, Fashion Reimagined: 

Discover the transformative power of sustainable fashion and be inspired by Amy Powney's journey of creating a sustainable fashion line.  

  • Saturday 19 October, 11am to 1pm 

  • Tuesday 22 October, 10.30am to 1pm 

Froctober Gallery Display: 

Visit the Moss Vale Civic Centre Atrium to discover local textile and mixed media art, sustainable clothing inspiration, and zero-waste design. 

  • Thursday 3 to Saturday 31 October, 8.30am to 4.30pm  

Free Sew and Upcycle Workshops: 

Learn to repair and upcycle your clothes with the help of experienced volunteers from Vinnies' Creative Space. Use pre-loved fabric and other resources available to create new and unique pieces. 

  • Tuesday 15 October, 12pm to 4pm 

  • Thursday 17 October, 12pm to 4pm 

Talk with a Sustainability Expert: 

Join international speaker Nina Gbor from the Australia Institute to learn sustainable fashion trends, tips for reducing your environmental impact, and how to make conscious clothing choices. 

  • Saturday 26 October, 10am to 12.30pm 

Grand Clothing Swap: 

Participate in a clothes swap event and find new, stylish items without contributing to waste. Register to donate your clothes in advance. 

  • Saturday 26 October, from 11am 

 

Wingecarribee Shire Council Environmental Officer – Sustainability, Morwenna Zabaks encouraged community members to get involved.  

"Froctober will empower residents to learn about fashion's environmental impact and embrace sustainable practices,” she said  

“By making small changes, such as buying less, choosing quality, and upcycling, we can significantly reduce clothing waste!  

“Together, let's keep clothing out of landfills and build a more sustainable future for fashion,” said Morwenna.
