Published on 29 May 2024
Wingecarribee Shire Council is seeking public input on its Draft Operational Plan and Budget 2024/25, which outlines a comprehensive strategy for achieving a greener, more sustainable future for the Shire.
Currently available for public review until Sunday, June 2, 2024, the report underscores our commitment to preserving and enhancing our natural environment as our region’s population grows.
Key initiatives include expanding the Bushcare volunteer program, promoting biodiversity conservation, and increasing the adoption of solar and electric vehicle technologies.
Wingecarribee Shire Council’s (WSC) Environment and Sustainability team is central to this effort, focusing on protecting and enhancing our natural environment through coordinated strategy, planning, education, and delivery of key programs.
“Our collaborative efforts encompass strategic planning, education, and the execution of vital environmental initiatives, some of which are conducted in partnership with the community and volunteers. Together, we can ensure our Shire remains vibrant, resilient, and environmentally responsible for generations to come," said Barry Arthur, Wingecarribee Shire Council’s Manager Environment and Sustainability.
Bushland and Biosecurity
Our Bushland and Biosecurity team works tirelessly to regenerate our bushland reserves, engage the community through the Bushcare volunteer program, and monitor biosecurity threats. Key actions for 2024/25 include expanding the Bushcare program, increasing volunteer engagement, and conducting comprehensive biosecurity weed inspections.
“Our Bushcare volunteer program educates and engages residents in preserving their local environment. We also support community actions through grants and events like Schools Environment Day and the Greener Footprint Fair.” Barry explained.
Natural Resources Management
This area focuses on developing and implementing strategies to conserve biodiversity and manage our natural resources effectively. Our initiatives include species protection projects, bushfire hazard management, and community education programs. "Supporting landholders with advice on biodiversity conservation and rural living is a crucial part of our strategy," notes Barry. Priority actions for 2024/25 include habitat restoration, promoting wildlife programs, and implementing key actions from the NSW Koala Strategy.
Sustainability Services
The Sustainability Services team are dedicated to promoting and implementing sustainability and energy management projects. This includes monitoring energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions and supporting community sustainability actions through grants and education programs. "Our goal is to increase the adoption of solar and battery technologies and expand electric vehicle charging infrastructure across the Shire," Barry explains. For 2024/25, we will focus on increasing the adoption of solar and battery technologies, expanding electric vehicle charging infrastructure, and delivering the Project Green schools program.
