Wingecarribee Embraces Reconciliation with New Action Plan

Wingecarribee Shire Council took a significant step towards reconciliation this week by adopting its inaugural Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP). This plan marks a new chapter in the Council's commitment to building stronger relationships and supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in our local community.

"The Reflect RAP is a roadmap for our reconciliation journey," said Michael McCabe, Wingecarribee Shire Council's Director of Communities and Place. "It will guide us in creating a more inclusive community with opportunities for everyone."

The Reflect RAP, developed in collaboration with Reconciliation Australia, outlines a 12-month action plan focusing on four key areas: Relationships, Respect, Opportunities, and Governance. This initial phase will assess the Council's current efforts and identify areas for improvement.

The plan goes beyond cultural recognition to address social and economic issues. It aims to improve employment outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and increase opportunities for Aboriginal-owned businesses. The RAP also features artwork by a Gundungurra artist, visually depicting important local Dreaming stories.

To ensure its effectiveness, the implementation of the Reflect RAP will be overseen by a RAP Working Group, led by RAP Champion Michael McCabe, Wingecarribee Shire Council’s Director of Communities and Place.

This Reflect RAP is the first step in Council's ongoing reconciliation efforts. As the plan progresses, there will be opportunities for broader community engagement.
