Wingecarribee Remembers Exhibition - Honouring all veterans / service personnel in our community
Running throughout the month of May, Wingecarribee Shire Council, in collaboration with local veteran groups, is proud to announce ‘Wingecarribee Remembers’, a poignant exhibition paying tribute to the Vietnam Veterans post 50 years conflict and all veterans thereafter, and the challenges they face post conflict.
Featuring a captivating documentary video, a collection of art and memorabilia, ‘Wingecarribee Remembers’ offers a heartfelt reflection on the experiences of local veterans and the enduring impact of their service. This compelling exhibition, funded by a grant from the Federal Government Department of Veteran Affairs, will be held at the Moss Vale Civic Centre's Atrium exhibition space throughout the month of May.
“As a veteran myself, I understand the challenges of returning to civilian life,” remarked Rick McCarthy OAM, echoing the sentiment behind 'Wingecarribee Remembers.' This exhibition highlights the need to support veterans, Danny Miscamble, veterans advocate Moss Vale RSL Sub-Branch, emphasises, “Veterans, including younger veterans, need to know their service is valued.”
Local artist Ben Quilty will showcase his evocative paintings, including poignant portraits of servicemen from Afghanistan. Ben Quilty's role as Australia's official war artist in 2011 adds a further layer and additional resonance to the exhibition. One of the portraits features a local resident highlighting the connection our community has with these younger veterans.
In a gesture of solidarity and support, Vinh Tran, local restauranteur, founder of Military Vehicle for Charity Inc, the Nui Dat RnR Museum in Bowral, and 2024 Australia Day Citizen Nominee, will contribute military memorabilia and a vintage Jeep from his esteemed collection to the exhibition.
The exhibition will also feature a video interview conducted by Ian Holland, local radio personality, of three courageous Vietnam veterans, offering first-hand accounts of their experiences. Additionally, period service photographs of local veterans will provide a poignant glimpse into the lives of those who have served.
‘Wingecarribee Remembers’ is a testament to the enduring legacy of our veterans and a call to action to support them and their families. Through meaningful conversations and shared experiences, we aim to foster understanding, empathy, and support for our veterans, war widows, and war orphans.
