Some great news about our treasured Joadja historic site and the renowned Distillery that is operating there. Wingecarribee Shire Council, along with the Joadja custodians Valero and Elisa Jimenez, are teaming up for a new Conservation Management Plan (CMP), and bringing in the expertise of Austral Archaeology to make it happen.

At a recent Council meeting, Administrator Viv May gave the green light for a Conservation Management Plan. This unique place is like a time capsule from the 19 th century when a shale oil industry thrived. Ghost town, school, train line – you name it, Joadja had it. Many of those amazing buildings, or relics, are still standing. You can even take tours and enjoy activities at the Joadja Historic Site.

The Conservation Management Plan will allow a strategy to save Joadja's heritage while letting our community enjoy it. Heritage NSW specifies the plan is required for any work or activities in a State Heritage Listed area. Austral Archaeology will help deliver the plan, to ensure Joadja is properly conserved.

Deniz Kilic, Council's Executive Manager Strategic Outcomes, says it's a fantastic chance for the Council and Elisa and Valero Jimenez to collaborate, and to apply the best heritage practices for the entire Joadja community. This all came together thanks to the Joadja Heritage Deed and a shared love for Joadja.

The plan is set to be completed by around June 2024. This will ensure Joadja remains a gem for our future generations to enjoy.
