Wingecarribee Shire Council is proud to announce its participation in a significant collaborative project dedicated to the restoration of the Wingecarribee River.

Council has partnered with Greening Australia, NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service, Southern Highlands Landcare Network, and Birdlife Southern Highlands to protect and restore critical habitat and improve the health of the Wingecarribee River.

The 73-kilometre Wingecarribee River is a vital natural corridor that meanders through the Southern Highlands, serving as a link between the coastal escarpment, the Blue Mountains World Heritage Area, and the Southern Tablelands. It is renowned as key habitat for platypus.

Sections of the Wingecarribee River are currently impacted by bank erosion and weed infestations, negatively affecting water quality, habitat value, and recreational opportunities.

The $1.39M restoration project, funded by the Federal Government’s Natural Heritage Trust under the Urban Rivers and Catchments Program, will see partners working with the local community over three-years to:

  • Reduce the impact of invasive weeds

  • restore and increase habitat for native species,

  • Improve awareness about the importance of riparian zones (the land alongside the river) and the species inhabiting riparian habitat.
