Seniors Festival Showcases Local Regenerative Farm with a Tour
Published on 03 April 2025
As part of the 2025 Seniors Festival, 18 lucky community members embarked on a regenerative farm tour of Snake Creek Cattle Co in Werai. The tour was part of the Sustainable Us Community Education program, offering an insightful look into the principles of regenerative agriculture (regen ag) and its impact on sustainable farming practices.
Regenerative agriculture focuses on land management strategies that enhance soil health, biodiversity, and carbon sequestration. Key principles include maintaining low cattle densities, rotating livestock between paddocks to allow land recovery, and minimising synthetic inputs such as pesticides. Additional practices, such as planting diverse vegetation to stabilise soil and support pollinators, contribute to a thriving ecosystem.
Snake Creek Cattle Co operates on a unique business model, raising cattle on 1,400 acres of lush, rolling pastures at very low densities. Calves stay with their mothers longer than conventional practices allow, promoting healthier livestock. Cattle are frequently rotated between paddocks, often guided by staff on horseback, ensuring optimal land recovery. Due to the careful management of both the land and animals, antibiotics are rarely needed.
The farm also embraces natural grass growth, including flowering plants that enhance biodiversity and improve soil stability. This approach not only benefits pollinators but also increases carbon capture, further supporting regenerative efforts.
Beyond cattle, Snake Creek Cattle Co cultivates fruits and vegetables and offers delicious pies made primarily from their own produce. Visitors can stop by for a lunch break or pick up a pie from the Co-Op in Bowral.
It is also important to acknowledge the ongoing challenges faced by local businesses, particularly in the hospitality industry post-COVID. Snake Creek Cattle Co has adapted while remaining committed to ethical farming and high-quality products. As a community, we can support these efforts by choosing locally produced goods whenever possible.
