Seniors

Approximately 35 per cent of people living in the Wingecarribee Shire are over the age of 60. These residents are an integral and essential part of our community and it should be recognised that enjoying a valued role as well as a meaningful life in our community as we grow older is something that everyone should be able to aspire to.

Wingecarribee Shire Council encourages active ageing and recognises and celebrates the many benefits that the ageing population contributes to our community.

Council also recognises that an ageing population presents a range of challenges that need to be addressed. In consultation with older people and the wider community, Council developed the Positive Ageing Strategy to address these challenges and to get people thinking about the future they see for themselves.

This strategy and its accompanying action plan sets out Council’s approach to supporting older people to live happy, healthy, independent lives and remain connected to their community as they age.

Seniors Directory

The Wingecarribee Seniors Directory is a free, biennial publication delivered across the Shire and the number one source of information about our local community, business, organisations and groups.

The directory has been created for community members aged over 60, who represent almost 35 percent of our Shire's total population.

Accessible parking

Accessible parking spaces are provided in Council car parks for people with disability who require extra space to exit or enter their vehicles or require close proximity to certain places due to mobility problems.

The Mobility Parking Scheme (MPS) provides parking concessions to people with mobility disabilities.

ServiceNSW issues a licence-style card that includes your photo and other security features to protect the integrity of the scheme. To park in accessible parking bays you must hold a mobility permit.

Maintaining independence

Older people are encouraged to maintain a healthy lifestyle and retain their independence, supported by access to local groups and services, a range of accommodation options and community facilities and spaces that reflect their needs.

There are a number of services and community groups that operate in the Wingecarribee Shire area. Many of these are listed on the MyShire Community Directory, including groups like U3A and Robertson CTC. You can also find information about the events and activities these groups and services provide on the MyShire Community Directory.

Some state-wide and national services may also be of interest to help you maintain a healthy lifestyle as you age. This includes things like the RSPCA Community Aged Care Program and Active and Healthy programs, as well as supports available through My Aged Care.

In addition, we have a range of community spaces available for use, including parks, swimming pools and leash-free areas for dogs, which may help you keep active and maintain your independence.
