Light Bulbs/Globes

Where to dispose;

Incandescent, LED and halogen light globes and bulbs can be placed in the council provided general waste bin (red lid). For safety, it is recommended to wrap the globes in newspaper or some form of packaging before disposal. Incandescent, LED and halogen bulbs can also be dropped off free of charge at the Resource Recovery Centre.

Fluorescent tubes and globes cannot be placed in the council provided bins due to the presence of mercury. They should be dropped off at the CRC, to be then collected by Tox Free, Cleanaway as part of an EPA approved program.

As fluorescent tubes and globes contain mercury, they are crushed by recyclers to separate phosphor powder from the glass. This powder is fed through receiving containers and filtered to capture mercury emissions. The mercury is then separated by distillation and sold for industrial use. The separated metal is also recycled.
