Polystyrene

Where to dispose;

Polystyrene or Styrofoam, is a common form of packaging, which is widely used as it is lightweight, low-cost and provides waterproof protection.

It is difficult to reuse and expensive to dispose of.

There are two types of polystyrene, including polystyrene (PS) and expanded polystyrene (EPS). See the Plastic Identification Code(PDF, 204KB) for more information.

PS can be dropped off free of charge at the Resource Recovery Centre, if it is clean, uncontaminated and under 1m3. Contaminated polystyrene e.g. is dirty or wet, has sticky tape attached or any other mixed products will be charged for disposal. See fees and charges for more information.

Polystyrene is processed on site through a hot press. This product is then bought by IS Recycling, who resell and reuse the product.

EPS, such as bean bag filling, should be disposed of through the council provided general waste bin (red lid).
