Earth Hour was established in 2007 by WWF Australia and is now an internationally recognised event with millions of people around the world taking part in switching off their lights for 60 minutes as a symbolic gesture of solidarity to show they care about our planet’s future.

This year Wingecarribee Shire Council chooses to give back to nature with a lower impact event - planting endangered habitat to help re-establish the Southern Highlands Shale Woodlands mainly found in the Southern Highlands. The Shale Woodlands have been brought to the brink of extinction due to clearing, join us to help this unique Endangered Ecological Community (EEC) recover. In addition, we will plant some species which are essential for our Glossy Black Cockatoo population, listed as vulnerable, these trees will provide habitat and food for these beautiful birds.

We will be planting 60 trees which represents the 60 minutes we are encouraged to turn off our lights for. We will also be planting lower and mid-story plants to support and increase the biodiversity of this area. Each person (6 years plus) gets to plant a tree and 3-5 plants - 60 spots available.

On Saturday 22 March the world switches off their lights for 60 minutes to help reduce the energy footprint of each home and raise awareness, if possible, please switch off your lights, usually done at 8:30 pm local time.

Earth Hour this year consists of the main planting day but also includes a kid's colouring in activity which will add flare to the tree guards essential to the survival and establishment of these trees. The kid's events are at our libraries at the end of the school holidays, see below for all event details:
